What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
Firstly, the number of people being catered for helps me to understand what size/number of tiers is required.
Second, it's always good to know how the customer wants the cake to be finished e.g. buttercream or fondant.
Third, it's good to know if the cake must have particular decorative elements or a theme, as I can include suggestions regarding the design. My ideas/creativity may help the customer decide whether they would like to work with me.
Fourth, it's always useful if I have a rough idea of the customer's budget.
Lastly, what's the venue? I only deliver wedding cakes free of charge to Warwickshire venues. For all others, there is a delivery fee that will need to be included in the quote.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Firstly, talk to the provider about their products. What flavours do they offer? Are they able to meet special dietary requirements e.g. vegan, gluten-free, eggless? Do they know their stuff when it comes to allergens? Many cake makers (like me) run their business from home and use a domestic kitchen. As a result, traces of allergens may be present in products - home-run businesses should be upfront about this.
Reviews are always a good way to check out potential suppliers, especially those left on social media. I'd also want to see pictures of happy customers enjoying the product. With most people posting pictures online of special events in their lives, these shouldn't be too hard for a supplier to source - especially if the client was impressed.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I’ve spent six years baking cakes that look and taste delicious to make the people I care about feel like royalty. Then, in 2020, the arrival of my own little prince inspired me to take my passion to the next level, and I opened a business specialising in wedding, celebration, and cupcakes.
People start businesses for all kinds of reasons; they encounter a problem with no solution, spot a niche in a well-established market, or want more control over their professional lives. Some are born entrepreneurs, while a major life event can push others to make the leap.
If I needed a life-changing event to spur me into action, 2020 had me spoilt for choice. Coronavirus began to devastate lives and economies across the globe, and on a personal level, I gave birth to my first child, Ted. This is a life-changing event at the best of times, but after countless miscarriages and operations, a complex delivery during a pandemic, and severe post-natal depression, it had been an exhausting journey.
Perhaps my struggles had made me braver, or world events had made life seem short, but I didn’t need any more prompting. After five years of doodling cake designs on magazines, I launched the Little Prince Cakery. I’m Kate, Head Baker & Decorator. My husband, Rhys, has enthusiastically appointed himself Master of Tasting, and our son, Edward, is the Little Prince.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
