What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
Quoting for bar hire is a tricky business as there are so many variables! Generally, a quick phone call after making initial contact is recommended to get a real feel for the event. To quote as accurately as possible we would need the location of the event, estimated times, number of guests, types of drinks required, location of bar (indoors or outdoors & whether a marquee/tent is required), availability of a Premises Licence or whether a TEN is required and finally whether guests are paying themselves or is it an inclusive bar.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Firstly I would ask for examples of previous work. Have they done similar events in the past? Are they capable of handling high volume bars. What level of experience do the staff have? Photos of bars would also be a great idea so you can see if they fit with any theme/colour scheme you may have – very important, especially for weddings. With any service of alcohol it is essential to ask if the event manager on the day has a Personal Licence for the sale of alcohol. It is prudent to ask what type of drinks they can provide. Is it just beers/wines/spirits or can they provide cocktails? Which products do they use? You don’t want to be stuck with supermarket own brand spirits! Finally ask if the company you are using has insurance. Every reputable company will be able to provide you with a certificate indicating the level of public and product liability.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
After spending 8 years in high volume cocktail bars and restaurants, working all aspects from bartending to international training though to management - the directors decided to go it alone and set up a small mobile cocktail bar company in Cheshire in 2005. Within a couple of years the company’s reputation for a fantastic, reliable service coupled with exceptional staff saw them sub-contracting for a host of events companies with the majority of the work in London & the South-East. In 2010 they took control of the London based company ‘Cocktail Stars’, merged the 2 companies and continued operations in both Cheshire and Buckinghamshire. We focus heavily on planning as well as execution with Barclaycard’s 50th Anniversary being a prime example – 5000 guests in 8 cities across the UK! Cocktail Stars always keep a keen eye on the bartending scene both in London and the North-West and continue to source the best staff, hand picking the ideal bartenders suited to your event’s requirements.
