Whether you are planning a small birthday party at home or organising a large open-air event, Charlie the Clown makes every occasion into something special and entertains children of all ages with a variety of characters. Read on for lots of insightful advice on choosing a similar provider and also how it all started for Charlie.
What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
To provide an accurate quote, it is essential to go through all the details of the party with the customer. This includes the age of the child, the number of children invited and if possible some idea of their ages.
Where will the party be, and is there a party theme? I can include music, props, magic and decoration to embellish any theme. If the customer changes their mind we can change the character right up until the night before the party.
Will the party be outside and if so, does the customer have a wet weather plan?
If Covid 19 interferes with plans, will the customer be interested in an online party?
All these details are gone through to ensure that the client and I know everything about the party. Then I send out a contract with all the information on it.
Once the customer has received the contract and checked it, he or she is able to secure the booking by paying a £25 deposit on-line.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
If possible, know what you are looking for before you set out.
Ask your child what kind of party they want. Have they recently been to a friends party which they really enjoyed? Speak to parents of that child and find out more about the entertainer by searching on-line and by word of mouth. Check the venue and confirm the date you want is available with the venue.
Then, if at all possible, speak to the entertainer over the phone. This is the best way to find out about his or her suitability. Does he or she sound confident? Maybe even put the child on the phone to the entertainer to say hello. check they are available on the date.
But don't hang around. Fortune favours the brave, so bear in mind the following:
1. There are plenty of good entertainers around, so once you think you have the right choice, go with your instinct.
2. Lots of other Mums and Dads are also trying to arrange their child's party, so strike while the iron's hot.
3. If you are bombarded with quotes, you simply won't be able to make up your mind.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I set out to become an actor but needed money to pay for classes.
I worked at Madame Tussauds' as a queue entertainer, where I met other drama students. Some had worked as birthday party entertainers. That's how I started out as a children' party clown.
Subsequently, I added other characters including a Pirate, Wizard, Story-Teller and Spaceman. Now I am able to offer over a dozen themed characters.
Since I started out, I have also developed my skill base to include music (singing with guitar) circus skills including juggling & plate spinning, balloon modelling and puppets. I also include my own songs with my own 'Hallo' and 'Goodbye' and 'Birthday songs.' I recently launched a CD of children's songs.
But it all comes back to the acting.
At a birthday party, the curtain goes up at the start of the party and stays up until the end of the party.
If you do a good job, the children and their parents and carers are delighted and on top of that, you get paid for doing something you love.
