My name is Ben Cruise and I am the sales director at Portable Toilets Limited (PTL), the UK’s most experienced supplier of all types of sanitation to events.

Our product offering is very broad, and we supply anything from 4000 PJs in a field for some of the UK’s largest festivals, to oak panelled modular kit (Hullabaloos) to luxury hospitality areas all over the UK and Europe.

We have also pioneered a sustainable vacuum product that has taken the market by storm over the last few years; our 5 Bay Vacuum POD Loos work incredibly well in guest and VIP areas alike, and feature at some of the biggest events in the country.

New product development has been a key area for us. Water use is essential in some product areas in portable sanitation, and we needed to address this within our product development. For upgraded/VIP areas, cabin toilets had been the mainstay for some time. Some of these units still use 5-6 litres of water per flush, an astonishing amount!

We needed to design a product that ticked the ‘upgraded’ box, but not at the expense of the environment. So, we looked to vacuum technology. We have spent in excess of £1m developing and manufacturing a product that uses fresh water, not chemical, but only 450ml of water per flush; reducing water use, but also reducing road miles as the tanks are emptied less frequently than traditional mains units or even recirc units.

This has led to a reduction in water use, compared to mains flushing units, of up to 90%. Not only is this a much more sustainable way to run an event, but the benefits do not end there. Fewer tank empties inevitably means less ‘rubber on the road’ and fewer miles being driven, not to mention tankers having to get in among the public less often, as all the vacuum tanks can be positioned ‘back of house’.
