What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

I need to know the expected amount of people (adults or children), who may want to have their face painted or a tattoo. Where the event will take place and whether it is indoors or outdoors. Finally, does the customer want to hire me per hour, or per number of guests that I work with?

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure the face painter has some kind of relevant professional training and that only the best make up brands are used (professional brands are Mehron, Superstar, FAB, Cameleon, TAG, Face Paints Australia) and, a must, that only cosmetic-grade glitter is applied. Ask about what the face painter does in order to keep the risk of infection to a minimum (are brushes sanitized)? Do they only use one sponge per child? Disposable applicators for eyes and lips? Be realistic. A good design takes at least 5 minutes to be finished, so take that into account when deciding the number of hours you need. Finally, look at the designs. Is the face painter up-to-date with the incredible pace of development of this field? Do the designs look fresh and pleasant?

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

Roskolora Face and Body Art started in Paris. I went there to do a mime course and I shared a room with a girl that was participating in a Body Art competition. I knew straight away that was my field. I had loved make up since I was a child, and I kept asking my parents to buy me a practice head with a make up kit- I never got it. I had worked as a cartoonist and illustrator, but I stopped because I could not see the point of such a solitary job. I am a teacher, and I love to help people to feel good, so face painting came clearly to me as the profession that had it all- illustration, make up and happy people. I bought my first kit online on that Paris weekend, enrolled on a professional course online, volunteered to do face painting at an event at my daughter’s nursery, and I have not stopped ever since.
