What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

No two parties are the same, so imagine how you would best like yours to be! We try to keep pricing simple but lots of factors have an impact on the hours we put in and even the materials we use, so useful information for us includes: The venue (we've worked in homes and haunted castles!), whether indoors or outdoors, number and age range of guests (face painting in particular is suitable for ages 3 to 103 but 4 year olds tend to take longer to paint than 40 year olds) and finally any special theme or activities you would like to consider.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Ask about three things: experience, equipment, insurance. These are three essential areas that will tell you all you need to know about your party provider and help you accurately compare one service with another.
How many years experience working in the party industry as an artist do they have? With children? Even ask what they love about it. You want to work out if your provider has enough experience to be confident, capable, and still have enthusiasm for what they are doing. That enthusiasm and confidence will add to your party experience. Ask for example pictures of work.

Especially with face painting, equipment counts! Ask your painter about their kit. Do they use clean sponges for each child and do they replace their paints regularly? Do they only use cosmetic body glitters? Again, you can even ask for a picture - does it look clean, inviting and colourful?

Finally, consider insurances and registrations. All activities and persons covered by the PLI will be listed on the proof of cover that any professional provider will be happy to show you. DBS certificates are reassuring but are not actually designed for party providers, artists and performers as they should not be in unsupervised or regular contact with party guests so don't be surprised if your provider doesn't have one.
Any company or provider handling your personal information, especially details of your children and home, should be registered with the Information Commissioner's Office and take the protection of your personal data seriously.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

After many years of providing art and craft activities for all sorts of client groups of all ages I became a childminder, and from there began also offering parties and face painting. Soon after, JuliaArts was born!
From the beginning in 2011, JuliaArts' services, parties and events were very popular and within 2 years became a full-time business offering party and pre-party services, body glitter tattoos for performers, studio paint and photo shoot services as well as live body art performances. With such a variety we are busy and I still love every painty, sparkly, creative minute of it! Just over a year ago now we relocated from Brighton on the south coast to Rotherham in South Yorkshire and are loving our new customers.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

Of all the bookings that have come through Add to Event the one that stood out the most to me was a Tour de Yorkshire booking on behalf of Yorkshire Bank.
It was a great event to be part of and as I was the painter available at the start of each race. I travelled with the Tour for the three days, enjoying the challenges, trekking across mud, through amazing countryside and even the wind and rain.
There was a great sense of comradery amongst the Yorkshire Bank ambassadors, staff volunteers and enthusiastic spectators who had made an effort to be there despite the weather. I was happy that I provided a great service as I planned ahead and bought two kits with me, one for sun and one for rain! Most people had never come across rainproof face painting before. It was a great feeling getting to see all the faces I had painted in the crowds cheering the riders on each day.
It's been great to be part of Add to Event as it has grown and developed, I highly recommend it to providers and organisers alike and I look forward to meeting more new customers this way!
