What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

To give a quote I'll need to know the date and time of your event, the location (areas outside London may require an additional travel fee), and what service you require as I provide a range of activities with different costs. Then you will have the full picture of how much you will be spending so there are no surprises on the day. I'll also need to know the number of people that you are expecting so that I know how busy I am likely to be and can adjust my designs accordingly.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

When hiring a face painter it is important not just to think about the cost, but also their level of expertise. A professional face painter can cope with any request that a child asks for and make up designs on the spot. They will be fast and able to complete each face in under 5 minutes where an amateur can take up to 20! They will use only professional face painting products which will have a large range of colours and be hygienic, non-allergenic, with long lasting colour that it easy to wash off and doesn't stain the face. They should definitely have Public Liability Insurance and may be a member of the FACE Association and abide by their Code of Conduct.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

I have been face painting since 2002, having had a lifelong interest in all things arty and crafty. Over the years I have taken lessons from some of the best face and body painters in the world, bought every book and DVD available, watched hours and hours of YouTube, and practised, practised, practised! Along the way I have picked up awards for my face painting, met some highly interesting people and been involved in many amazing events, from small private parties up to shopping centres and football matches. I have even had photographs of my work appear in newspapers around the world, been turned into memes, gone viral and have appeared on television (trying) to teach David Dickinson how to face paint!

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

I was found on Add to Event by David from Wilton's Music Hall, which is an original Victorian music hall near the Tower of London. They were holding a public event to invite the community in to see what they have on offer throughout the year, as they stage authentic music hall performances and pantomimes as well as behind the scenes activities for local people to get involved in. The theme of the event was "Wilton's and the Sea" so I had prepared a lot of sailor tattoo style designs, but the children were happy with their old favourites, so lots of tigers and butterflies were seen! The whole event was a huge success and Wilton's have had me back three times since then - even for their Grand Reopening event after their refurbishment, which was attended by HRH Prince Charles, Roy Hudd and Rory Bremner. Prince Charles saw me painting and complimented my work, I did offer to let him have a go as he is a painter himself but he politely declined!
