About ALT Hackney
Hi, I'm Aya — founder of ALT Hackney and your guide, along with my partner Danny! We specialise in hands-on adult workshops where you'll craft trays, pen pots, photo holders, and festive ornaments using eco-resin Jesmonite — a water-based, solvent-free, animal-friendly material.
Why Choose Us Ditch concrete's environmental harm for sustainable, unique homeware you'll make yourself. No two pieces are identical, with all materials and expert guidance provided. Feel the thrill of creating polished stone or terrazzo effects — perfect for eco-conscious adults!
Join this Jesmonite tray-making class in Hackney and get your hands in the mix to create something beautiful with eco-resin. This hands-on workshop blends clean pouring, sculpting, and colour experimentation to help you make a one-of-a-kind terrazzo tray in a relaxed studio setting. You don't need any prior experience to take part – you'll be guided step-by-step through mixing, pouring, and sanding so you leave with a polished, professional-looking piece you made yourself.
Whether you’re planning a creative date night, a catch-up with friends, or a solo self-care session, this class turns an ordinary evening into a tactile, satisfying craft experience full of colour, music, and conversation. It’s a great place to start if you’re looking to switch off from screens and enjoy some slow, mindful making in a supportive environment.
This workshop is perfect for: Friends and social groups – Chat, create, and share the process together Couples – Enjoy a relaxed, creative, and hands-on date night Solo creatives – Find a moment of peace and focus on your craft Special events – Ideal for birthdays, team-building, or hen dos Beginners – All skill levels are encouraged to join the fun
You'll have everything you need to succeed, including: Walk away with your own handmade Jesmonite tray and enjoy the rewarding glow of having crafted something beautiful, functional, and uniquely yours.

Our Story
ALT Hackney was founded from a passion for contemporary design, colour, and creating beautiful objects that bring joy to everyday life. What began as an exploration of Jesmonite and terrazzo techniques quickly evolved into a creative studio dedicated to designing and handcrafting distinctive homeware, gifts, and decorative pieces.
Inspired by modern art, architecture, interiors, and the vibrant creative energy of East London, we are particularly drawn to bold colour combinations, playful patterns, and the beauty of handmade craftsmanship. Every piece we create reflects a balance between design, functionality, and individuality.
Our workshops were developed from a desire to share this creative process with others. We believe that making something with your own hands is both rewarding and empowering, and our classes are designed to be welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable for complete beginners as well as experienced creatives.
Through our workshops, we invite people to slow down, experiment with colour and materials, learn a new skill, and leave with a unique handmade piece they can be proud of. Whether guests join us for a personal creative experience, a celebration, or a team-building event, our goal is to provide an inspiring and memorable experience that encourages creativity and connection.

Our Team
ALT Hackney is a creative studio founded by Aya, based in East London.
Aya, originally from Japan, has a background in music and web design. Her approach is rooted in Japanese minimalist and functional design principles, where simplicity, balance, and usability are central to every idea. One of her earliest product concepts was a rectangular plant pot designed with a perfectly integrated water tray, allowing function and form to coexist without disrupting the overall aesthetic. She leads the brand direction, product development, and digital presence, combining a refined design sensibility with technical skills in web and visual design.
Danny joined ALT Hackney in 2024 and has since brought a bold, expressive use of colour to the brand’s creative direction. With a background in photography, he plays a key role in shaping the studio’s visual language, focusing on composition, light, and vibrant colour storytelling. His influence has helped expand the brand into more playful and colour-led designs while maintaining a strong visual identity.
Together, they combine minimalism and vibrancy, structure and expression, creating handcrafted Jesmonite pieces and workshop experiences that reflect both considered design and joyful creativity.
