What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
The event date and location is the starting point. Then the theme or party type - is it a corporate event, wedding or Birthday party? The next key point is the access time. We can only do so much in the time available - the bigger the access window before the event starts the more we can do.
Access can also affect the price - if we have a small access window we'll bring a bigger crew to complete the task.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Most suppliers on this platform are very professional and helpful. Maybe look to see if they have a website and make sure their photos are their own work (and not something copied from Pinterest). Another good sign is how long they've been trading.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
I started my business in 1991. It was something I always wanted to do (work for myself) and in the 1990's balloons were booming especially at weddings. The biggest thing I have learnt over the 30 years of trading is how markets and trends change - the balloon displays supplied in the 1990's are totally different than the designs of today. In recent years it's become more important to supply environmentally friendly products and reuse frames & hire products.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
I've had a few bookings through this platform and all went to plan. I have to pick and choose carefully as I'm VAT registered so I can't compete with private events where I seem to be 20%+ more expensive. I convert more corporate events which are usually on weekdays and happy to pay the VAT.
I feel I struggle to compete with weekend work where I really need a minimum of £200 to justify the time involved.
