What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

If you’re thinking about a caricaturist for your event please let us know where and when your event is taking place, roughly how many peoples are expected to attend and how many hours the entertainment section is to last. Bear in mind indoor events are the preference but if outdoors you will need to ensure there is some wet weather cover (a tent or similar). Another point is lighting; if an evening booking at least one part of the space will need to be kept well-lit enough to ensure faces can be seen clearly. Lastly, we have a team available meaning multiple caricaturists could work together or in different areas of the space, so let us know if that’s of interest.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

It is important to remember that caricaturing is entertainment and not a substitute for a photographer or videographer making a recording of an event. The number one question we’re asked is “how many will you draw?” and that is understandable, but never possible to answer precisely as people’s faces are not uniform and some will take longer to draw than others. We strongly advise that big promises – 100 drawings an hour, for example – are taken with a wee pinch of salt; even the very best caricaturist will struggle to produce a good likeness if they spend less than 60 seconds on each. We give a few minutes’ worth of attention to each sitter. Not so long that they get restless but not so short that they’re denied a memento they’d wish to keep.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

The Scottish Cartoon Art Studio was established in 1999 as the country’s first team of professional cartoonists and caricaturists making their services available to the events sector. Since then we have worked in fantastic settings all over Scotland, from the Gleneagles Golf Resort to Edinburgh Castle. In addition, we have exhibited our FIZZERS® caricatures of famous faces at high profile venues such as The People’s Palace & Winter Gardens, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, The Guardian News & Media Gallery, the Scottish Parliament and in cartoon festivals around Europe (Croatia, France, Norway, Romania and Spain). You will not find a bigger accumulation of caricature experience in Scotland than our team.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

We joined Add To Event not long before the pandemic hit! But as we ease out of lockdown we’ve noticed a rapid uptick in enquiries and just secured our first wedding booking since couples were able to start welcoming guests again.
