What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

I need to know what the type of event is - i.e birthday party, christening, festival etc. Also, the approximate age range of guests and how many people will be expected to want face painting. This helps me but it also helps you because I want to meet your expectations as a customer. I want to be upfront and honest with my customers. It also helps if you know the venue, although I appreciate not everyone does at a quotation stage. Although, it's helpful to know if it's indoors or outside.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Always choose someone who is fully insured. Choose someone local to you - it's easier to get away with doing a poor job if you live miles away. Consider whether speed or quality or both are important to you. A good face painter can paint around 12 an hour. Make sure they use EU regulated products and cosmetic grade glitter. Check for hidden extras, cancellation charges etc. Read their reviews and ask questions if something doesn't seem right. See what their communication is like. If they can't be bothered responding to you fairly quickly (within a day) this is a bad sign, what could they be like on the day? Do they have a back up plan (i.e. replacements they can call) if they get sick? Also, don't be swayed by all singing all dancing fancy pants places that claim to do all manner of services at one event. No matter how talented, people only have one pair of hands so you will either end up paying for extra people or with jobs done sloppily in my opinion. I like to stick to doing one thing and doing it well.

Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.

I started Face Ace in 2014, as I wanted a job that allowed me to be creative whilst engaging with people, putting my Nursery Nurse and customer service background to good use. I taught myself to paint on youtube and have gotten quicker and better with each passing year. Many of my customers are repeat customers and I have an excellent local reputation in Calderdale with lovely reviews. I try to go the extra mile for my customers by offering bling, chunky glitter, bespoke theme options and by arriving early to set up. I am the mother of a young boy, so understand the stress of birthday parties and events. I think this helps me empathise as I like to treat people how I would like to be treated.

Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?

I did a lovely wedding event in Ripponden through Add to Event, in a old fashioned country pub. There was a good mix of ages, and it's always a joy to be part of a special family occasion. The bride and groom were so happy with their designs and wrote me a glowing review. I love Add to Event, because it puts the customer at it's heart, giving detailed options for reviews.
