Established in August 2013, Big 5 Catering has catered for thousands of people over many, many events.
Started by South African chef, Darren Andrews, Big 5 Catering pays homage to his South African upbringing and years of cooking on wood and hot coals at family events.
By incorporating the flavours and well-known meats associated with South African braais along with traditional British BBQ food, Big 5 Catering brings a taste of South Africa to your event.
We also offer the firm favourites such as Bunny Chow, using our tried and tested Cape Malay and Durban Curry sauces and Lamb Spit Roasts.

Our Story
Born and raised in South Africa, Darren started cooking at a young age and honed his skills through trial and error in his home kitchen. While studying or hosting revision sessions at home, Darren would always start in the kitchen, rustling up things like calamari rings and triple-fried chips for his fellow students (it became a popular home to revise at).
BBQ cooking (or braais as we call them in South Africa) is a rite of passage for South Africans and a regular event in many households across the country. Darren's passion for well cooked food on a braai, along with the seasonings and marinades familiar in South Africa is what drives him as he brings these flavours to events here in the UK.
Our Team
The business is run by Darren Andrews but he has the best team of young people to help at each event, including his two lovely daughters who are both great cooks and can often be found flipping meat and keeping the fire stoked when needed.
Experience
Big 5 Catering was a regional finalist in The Wedding Industry Awards 2023 and was North West winner of the Federation of Small Businesses Self Employed/Sole Trader of the Year.
Typical Clients
Our annual events calendar is split between weddings, corporate events and private parties (such as anniversaries, Christenings, birthdays, wakes and retirement celebrations).
Credentials
We're members of the National Caterers Association (NCASS) and Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Darren qualified as a Company Secretary in South Africa and also holds certificates in Marketing, Level 3 Award in Food Safety & Manufacturing, and Food Safety and Hygiene Level 3 for Supervisors.
Big 5 Catering has also held a Five-Star Food Safety rating since its inception in 2013.
