What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?

For us to provide a comprehensive quote to a customer we would need the following information:
The date of the event
The location of the event
The time of the event
A brief explanation of the type of event and a rough estimate of the expected number of guests.
With this information, we can then get together a suitable list of entertainments suitable and provide a tailored quote.

What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Ask as many questions as you can before the event. Let the supplier know exactly what your expectations are for the type of entertainment you are requesting.
Get all of the nitty-gritty important information discussed before the event so suppliers and clients know exactly what will happen beforehand in order for the event to run as smoothly as possible.
