What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
For a smaller event ie, 2 to 400 cap, the number of persons and the size of the room including ceiling height, and stage area are very useful in deciding on the correct size of PA. For outside events, the field size is crucial, as well as the area to which the customer expects concert sound or the extended area to which they just want background music. If named artistes are involved, a spec list of equipment at the earliest opportunity gets a more accurate quote, and less add ons later.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Ask for a list of events of a similar nature to which they have supplied. there are a lot of people with 'PA' that is of non-pro quality and unsuitable for pro musicians. Ask for insurances and PAT tests. Ask which artistes they have worked with and when. For bars, ask which breweries are supplying, and which events they have attended, get photos if possible or references from festival organisers.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
Guerilla PA started life as a sound system and then live music, as I was always involved in bands since 1979. I grew into running festivals and peoples events as it seemed the natural thing to do and I enjoy it. I have been lucky enough to nurture staff who now work with international artistes, and return to work with me when tours are over! I get to do the sound for artistes who I have bought records by!
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
We supplied a stage and sound for a lovely small festival at a student gathering in Durham, one of my favourite cities. we hired a PA to a lovely birthday party in Whitley bay. We took the vDubshack bar to a major football club players event and it was very popular! None of these event organisers would have found us had we not been on the Add to Event list.
