About Lucas John Photography

I’m a documentary photographer specialising in authentic, story-driven imagery that captures real moments with atmosphere and impact. My work focuses on people, performance, and environments, combining a documentary approach with a cinematic visual style to create images that feel both natural and visually striking.

I’ve worked with a range of creative, cultural, and commercial clients, including Royal Exchange Theatre, The Performers Playground, Bespoke Tailors such as Owen Scott, James Personal, Globestar, Bloodline Gym, Numerous Theatre Companies, and The 99 Club, as well as photographing work connected with actor and writer Andy Nyman. Through these collaborations, I’ve created imagery that captures the energy, character, and story behind each project.

My work has also been recognised internationally. I’ve been shortlisted for the Photography Foundation Awards for three consecutive years and for the Paris International Street Photography Awards for two years running. Clients hire me for my ability to work naturally within real environments, capturing genuine moments while delivering strong, narrative-driven imagery.

Whether documenting performances, creative spaces, or people at work, my goal is always to produce photographs that feel authentic, engaging, and memorable.

Our Story

I was born in Leeds and spent many years living and working in London as an actor before photography gradually became the way I started observing the world more closely. Performing on stages such as the Royal Opera House and teaching actors from around the world gave me a deep appreciation for human expression—something that continues to shape the way I photograph people and moments.

My work is influenced by the romantic tradition of street photography, particularly photographers like Robert Doisneau and Brassaï, who revealed the poetry hidden within everyday life. I’m drawn to what I often think of as the spaces in between—those fleeting gestures and quiet interactions that often go unnoticed. Alongside my photography, I’ve been involved in humanitarian work, experiences that deepened my interest in storytelling and the shared moments that connect people across cultures. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with Fujifilm, collaborating with them around photography and camera systems that support the documentary and cinematic style I pursue in my work.

Today my photography remains intuitive and observational. Whether I’m documenting street life, photographing performers, working with brands, or capturing family moments, I’m always searching for images that feel human, cinematic, and quietly alive.

Our Team

My team is myself, my eye for the moment, and a heart and passion for life and human connection.

Experience

I’ve been fortunate to have my work recognised internationally, being shortlisted for the Paris International Street Photography Awards two years running and for the The Photography Foundation Awards three years running. My images have been exhibited across the UK and featured in publications such as The Pictorial List, highlighting the documentary and cinematic style I pursue in all my work.

Typical Clients

My clients are people who value honest, thoughtful photography. They come to me when they want images that feel natural and authentic—photographs that capture real moments rather than something overly staged.

I work with a wide range of individuals and organisations, from performers and creatives to independent businesses and families. Many of the artists and performers I photograph are looking for images that feel cinematic while still remaining truthful to who they are. I’ve had the privilege of photographing performers such as Andy Nyman, as well as working with gyms, comedy venues, and independent brands across London.

Alongside this, I regularly photograph families and everyday life in a documentary style. These sessions are relaxed and unobtrusive, focusing on genuine interactions and the small, fleeting moments that often become the most meaningful images over time. Whether I’m documenting a live performance, working with a brand, creating portraits, or capturing family life, my clients tend to share the same outlook: they want photography that feels human, observant, and quietly cinematic—images that reflect real people and real moments.

Credentials

I’m a key member of the The Urban Photographers Club, a community that was awarded Photography Community of the Year at the Amateur Photographer Magazine Awards. Being part of this group has allowed me to connect with fellow photographers, collaborate on projects, and contribute to a thriving network that celebrates street and documentary photography across the UK
