What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
Initially, we would need to know the type of event the approximate number of hours to work and have a general idea of the kind of presentation needed. Then our comprehensive booking form will be emailed or posted, which enables our customers to be more specific and fine-tune their requirements so we have a complete picture of the service they expect from us.
Bookings are then confirmed in writing.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
We would advise customers to be certain that the disco they ultimately book has a thorough knowledge of their needs. For a mobile disco, this would cover the style of presentation and the music played. While it can be argued that the music is the most important part of any event, the presentation style should be appropriate for the event in question. A wedding reception would not require a loud pub or club-style DJ, unless that has been specified, in much the same way that you wouldn't want a DJ who only has modern R&B and chart music in their collection to host an 80th birthday party.
Do you need subtle mood lighting for your event? Or maybe your event requires a full-on night club style light show? Check that the disco has good feedback, which can easily be verified.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
The idea of becoming a DJ and an entertainer with your name in lights really appeals to many, as it did to me at the beginning. But for me personally, it was more about production and delivery.
I was lucky enough to work as a producer for a well-known chart-topping band for 11 years and I learned so much from some real front-line professionals. Having seen so many discos over the years and (I hate to say) feeling that I could provide a more complete service and an actual 'show', as opposed to simply playing a string of hits, really appealed to me. Most customers require something simpler and really just want a competent DJ who understands their needs and focuses on playing the right music. We realised very quickly that the customer is far more important than any self-important DJing techniques.
The satisfaction gained when seeing a crowd really enjoy themselves cannot be beaten.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
We were asked to provide tailored audio production for a beauty pageant, "Miss Mansfield & Sherwood Forest". This was literally a last-minute affair as their regular producer had to cancel that very afternoon due to illness. I was given a very specific and highly detailed sequence of audio events.
This was one of the most nerve-wracking moments I have experienced in my disco career as I was completely on my own back then. I followed my typewritten instructions, about 100 of them! to the letter. Each sequence designed by the organisers to provide a spectacular audio soundtrack to the evening's proceedings. The show ran for almost 4 hours.
After the show, I met the winner of the previous year's Miss Mansfield, Ohio, USA, who had come along as part of an exchange deal for the event. (Mansfield, Ohio was Mansfield, Nottinghamshire's twin town.) She came over to thank me for a faultless show and to tell me that she was hugely impressed, but also confessed that she had not expected this to run smoothly at all in view of the lack of time available to 'train up a new recruit.
