What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
If you are looking for a wedding photographer the most important information is the date - then I can check to see if I am available! Then where is the wedding to be; the venue and location. Finally how long would you like me to be there, anything from a couple of hours to all day.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
When choosing a wedding photographer look around and take your time. Most importantly look at example software the photographers work and try to get a feel for their style. Ask to meet up so that you can see if you get along, you will be spending a lot of time together. Be clear about what you are after and any special moments that need to be captured.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
Some thoughts about me. After studying for an MA in Social Science at Glasgow University, I was lucky enough to live and work on the Island of Iona for many years, during which time I had my own traditional darkroom and digital photographic restoration business. While living there I photographed and wrote a book: The Cloisters of Iona Abbey, my first commercial success.
In 2007 I went back to University (Derby) to study for a B. A. (Hons) in Commercial Photography, for which I was given a first. I was also pleased to be awarded Associate membership of the British Institute of Professional Photography, ABIPP, at the same time, based on my portfolio of work. After moving to the far North of Scotland I allowed my BIPP membership to lapse. Now I am based in Edinburgh.
It took nearly 25 years but I am now delighted to finally be a full-time photographer.
