Bubble waffles are sweet snacks that were first created in Hong Kong back in the 1950s by shopkeepers who wanted to avoid broken eggs going to waste. They mixed the eggs with flour and milk, poured the mixture into special bubble-shaped moulds and sold them as individual, bubble-shaped snacks. These snacks, called gai daan jai, became really popular, and food carts selling bubble waffles were soon found all over Hong Kong. They were only introduced to the UK a few years ago, so they’re sure to be a real showstopper at any celebration or event. Although they’re presented as one big waffle it’s traditional to eat each bubble individually, which makes them great for sharing.

Bubble waffles are available in a vast range of flavours, like chocolate, strawberry, matcha, banoffee and cookies and cream, to name a few. There are also savoury options available such as cheese and bacon, char sui pork and numerous other salty snacks.
