Able to cater for weddings, parties, private or corporate functions and festivals, Killins Kitchen serve their wide range of produce from their specialist food van.
What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
To provide an accurate quote, I need to know as much as they do about the event they are organising. Obviously, the date and start time, as well as how long the trade will last and whether there are any obstacles. This could be the location, dietary requirements or lack of power and water. I also need to know how many they want catering for and what they have in mind - burgers or fillet steak! The more they tell me, the more accurate I can be.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
I would check their reviews and see what other people are saying about their services. Always ask about the produce and their limitations, strengths and weaknesses. This will help you formulate whether the provider is right for you and give you confidence in booking them. I'd also ask if they can offer something slightly different. Even if you don't necessarily want it, it is good to see how accommodating they are to your needs.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
Killins Kitchen came about when I hit the big 30! I studied hospitality management in Switzerland and worked as a restaurant manager since I graduated in many large companies. Whilst enjoying it, I had this overwhelming urge to have my own business and offer my customers great quality produce at fantastic value. I knew I could offer a better product to the public at a better price so why work hard for someone else when I can work hard for myself.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
I have my own regular pitch but I rely on Add to Event to gain larger events. I have been with Add to Event for over two years now and I can not recommend them highly enough. At any event that I get talking to other traders I always mention them, as I believe it is a great platform for any business to be a part of. Every event I have done has been successful but one that stands out for me was a glamping site at Glastonbury festival. It was a new venture for the organiser and we were both eager to have a great experience. I would serve 300 people breakfast, from the van, in a space of 2 hours each day and then stay open for lunch and dinner throughout the festival. Everyone enjoyed the food and through Add to Event I now have a great contact and will be back this year with the site being twice the size. Through this platform I have gained many positive events and formed great working relationships. I will always recommend the website as I would be lost without it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to hire a food van?
The cost of hiring a food van can vary depending on a number of factors including the number of guests, length of hire and where they are based. One way of cutting down costs is to have guests to pay for the food themselves, thus cutting down the hire charge. If you’re ready to hire you can gain multiple quotes from local suppliers using our request quotes form.
How can I find a cheap food van for my event?
As with anything in life, you get what you pay for so do make sure you’re considering quality as well as price. By opting for a food van over a sit down meal, the cost is certain to be less as you won't need to hire any tableware, you may well save yourself some more money too as there won’t be any need to hire staff either.
What types of food vans are available to hire?
The great thing about food vans is that they come in all shapes and sizes. Add to Event can help find you a caterer serving out of Citroen H Vans or even old ambulances! As well as different styles of vehicles, there’s a wide range of cuisines available from burger vans to Asian mobile catering.
Can I hire vegetarian food vans and vegan food vans?
Food Vans can almost always cater for dietary requirements, including gluten free, and will often have prepared for this in advance. This is something that you should discuss with your provider well before the event.
Can I hire a food van for a wedding?
Food vans are a great choice of food for weddings, particularly those going for a festival vibe wanting multiple cuisines! Because of the type of food typically served by food vans, serving times can be quite quick too so this works very well when providing evening food.
What do food vans need to operate?
Many food vans are self-sufficient and others that rely on exterior power will often supply their own generators. However, some may require external power or water to operate and so it is important to ask your caterer about this before the event. If your provider requires these external supplies, make sure to check with your venue that these will be available.
Is there anything else I should be aware of?
All food vans should have a valid health and hygiene certificate to show when asked. As well as this, it’s a good idea to make sure they have Public Liability Insurance too.
